Chapter 5 takes the next step and asks the socio-economic question behind that distinction: what happens when companies automate at scale, cut costs and accelerate processes while the number of secure, well-paid workers shrinks or their wage bargaining power weakens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of a more productive economy sounds attractive at first. But for the economy as a whole, productivity alone is not enough. An economy needs not only efficient providers, but also sufficiently solvent customers. This is precisely where technological progress can turn into a confidence trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Basic Problem: More Output, Weaker Demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies invest in automation to reduce errors, cope with labour shortages, lower wage costs and improve scalability. At the firm level, that can be rational. At the macro level, however, a contradiction emerges if those same efficiency gains weaken the income base on which later revenues depend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chain works roughly like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">more AI and automation<br>\u2192 less labour demand or weaker wage growth in parts of the economy<br>\u2192 more insecure households and lower propensity to consume<br>\u2192 weaker revenues across many sectors<br>\u2192 renewed doubts about investment returns and valuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is therefore not technical progress itself, but the timing and social distribution of its consequences. The savings often arrive immediately. New jobs, higher wages and broader prosperity appear \u2013 if at all \u2013 later, unevenly or in smaller numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote cr165-thesis is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A confidence recession can begin when companies rationalize more successfully than society creates new buyers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Infrastructure Is Not a Cloud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many debates about artificial intelligence sound weightless. In reality, AI is highly physical: it needs data centres, high-performance chips, power grids, substations, cooling, water, specialized construction, fibre, software, maintenance and security. This infrastructure creates investment and orders, but it also increases the fixed costs of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The larger this infrastructure becomes, the more urgent three questions become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Who pays for it?<\/strong> Hyperscalers, lenders, investors, states or end customers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who benefits from it?<\/strong> A few platforms, a narrow supplier set or the broader economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who bears the social side effects?<\/strong> Workers, municipalities, electricity customers and taxpayers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image of immaterial progress is therefore misleading. AI is not just code but a new infrastructure order \u2013 and every infrastructure order distributes costs and returns politically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Headcount, Labour Share and Demand Power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every act of automation destroys jobs. Many processes change tasks, raise skill requirements or create new roles. But for the macro confidence question, three variables matter more than the raw count of all jobs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Headcount:<\/strong> how many people find work at all?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Labour share:<\/strong> what share of national income goes to labour rather than capital?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Income security:<\/strong> how predictable are employment, career progression and purchasing power for households?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An economy can approach full employment on paper and still develop a demand problem if more people drift into weaker, less secure or lower-paid work. Even people who still have a job consume more cautiously when they no longer trust their next raise, next contract or sector stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a gradual loss of demand power. Not everyone becomes unemployed. But many households behave as if they must secure their financial future more tightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New Geography of Consumption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automation and platform economics also change where income is created at all. High AI and infrastructure gains often concentrate in a few metro areas, a few firms and a few functions. The consumption loss, by contrast, spreads more broadly: across service providers, mid-sized firms, suppliers, local retailers, educated employees and increasingly also well-paid knowledge workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can create a paradoxical geography: glittering technology campuses and data centres on one side, more cautious town centres, weaker secondary hubs and thinner local consumption markets on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is then no longer only how much growth is created, but where it is created and how strongly it feeds back into the rest of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Backlash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an already strained economy, automation and AI can intensify political resistance. Three countercurrents matter especially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>cultural resistance:<\/strong> consumers, workers and professions turn against firms that pair layoffs with AI deployment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>regulatory resistance:<\/strong> states respond with liability rules, transparency duties, data localization, antitrust actions or labour protections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>sovereignty resistance:<\/strong> regions or states try to reduce dependence on foreign platform and cloud providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains open how strong these counter-movements will become. But they are an important warning signal. They can raise costs and damage the narrative of a frictionless AI boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A confidence recession thrives when many small doubts grow at once: buyers doubt their future, workers doubt their security, investors doubt returns and governments doubt their own steering capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy and Distribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI infrastructure is also energy-intensive. As data centres, chip fabrication and digital services absorb more electricity, distributional conflicts emerge with industry, households and local grids. Even if enough capacity can technically be built, the distribution question remains politically sensitive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">more AI power demand<br>\u2192 more grid expansion and investment<br>\u2192 higher system costs or stronger redistribution<br>\u2192 political conflicts over prices, priorities and subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the real economy, the implication is clear: a technology that promises productivity can simultaneously increase the cost of the system on which it depends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Is Central to the Confidence Recession<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination of automation, concentrated gains, less secure incomes and rising infrastructure costs can create a demand gap. Companies then automate further because they respond to weaker demand with more efficiency. Yet that same response can weaken the customer base further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a circular process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">weaker demand<br>\u2192 efficiency pressure and automation<br>\u2192 weaker income base<br>\u2192 even weaker demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every industry follows this pattern. But the more it appears in large sectors such as administration, IT services, customer service, media, logistics, retail, back-office functions and parts of knowledge work, the larger the macroeconomic risk becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote cr165-thesis is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automation without customers is not an innovation model.
