Air conditioners, lifts and machines stop. Then phones and laptops lose their connection to the outside world. Mobile base stations switch to batteries, pumps can no longer move water, and shops cannot accept electronic payments. Cold chains begin to fail. Transport, work and communication become harder. If the outage lasts long enough, a technical disruption becomes a social and economic crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What disappears is not simply electricity. It is the ability to operate other systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electricity is therefore neither an ordinary commodity nor merely one branch of the energy sector. It is the common operating layer of modern society. Almost every future now being promised to us \u2014 electric mobility, automated factories, artificial intelligence, digital government, robotics or space flight \u2014 assumes that more electricity can be supplied more reliably than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet that future is often discussed as if its physical foundation already existed. We debate AI models without speaking about power plants. We plan electric vehicles without accounting for distribution grids. We add new generation and treat firm capacity as an administrative footnote. We celebrate falling power prices during individual hours while grid, storage and reserve costs may be rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wall socket may be the modern state\u2019s most successful promise: nobody thinks about it until the promise is broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defining scarcity of the electric century is not necessarily energy itself. The Earth receives immense quantities of solar energy. It contains fossil fuels and uranium and is surrounded by wind, water and heat. The scarcity lies in our ability to make energy available at the right time, in the right place and in the required form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between an energy source and its social value lies a system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy \u2192 conversion \u2192 grid \u2192 temporal balancing \u2192 application \u2192 possible economic output<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chain is the physical spine of this dossier. It does not imply that every kilowatt-hour passes through a battery. \u201cTemporal balancing\u201d names the layer of storage, reserves, flexible generation, demand response and interconnections that keeps supply and demand aligned at every moment. And \u201cpossible economic output\u201d contains the crucial qualification: electricity consumption alone produces neither productivity nor prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every stage requires materials, capital, technology, political decisions and trust. Every stage can become a toll gate, a bottleneck or an instrument of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geopolitics changes with it. During the twentieth century, access to oil shaped industrial mobility and military reach. Oil remains important in the twenty-first, but a second power order is forming above it. At its centre are generation, grids, semiconductors, data centres and the ability to turn electricity into information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is the most visible expression of this change. It appears as immaterial software, but it is becoming a new heavy industry. Its factories are data centres. Its machines are chips. Its feedstock is electricity. Its financing depends on capital markets, states and expectations of future productivity gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI wager is therefore larger than the race to build the best model. It is a wager that an entire physical, financial and political order will work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electric century will not be won by the country that merely produces the most power. What matters is the ability to distribute electricity reliably, use it productively and learn from failure. Energy must become infrastructure, infrastructure must become agency, and agency must become social value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the real upheaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The twentieth century asked who owned the fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The twenty-first will ask who can build a functioning electric system from them \u2014 and, increasingly, without them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The claim that the twenty-first century will be the electric century has one obvious weakness: the twentieth century was electric already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric light extended the usable day. Motors distributed power within factories without relying on a central steam engine, shafts and belts. Refrigeration changed food, trade and medicine. Radio and the telephone separated communication from the travel speed of a human being. Washing machines, vacuum cleaners and other appliances altered time budgets, labour and expectations of comfort. In cities, trams became moving infrastructure; in the countryside, a grid connection was a step out of isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electrification was not one invention. It was a new ability to connect inventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Edison opened an early large-scale electricity supply system in New York in 1882, he was not merely providing a better lamp. He combined generation, wires, meters, tariffs, maintenance and paying customers. That was the deeper innovation. A light bulb without a power plant remained an exhibit. A power plant without a grid was merely a building full of large machinery. Only the system made electricity ordinary.<sup><a href=\"#source-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This first electrification transformed society, but it remained more sectoral than hindsight suggests. Transport continued to run largely on oil. Heat came from coal, gas, fuel oil or biomass. Many high-temperature industrial processes depended on combustion. Agriculture and global logistics relied on liquid fuels. Even the electrified factory often received its materials from a world whose ships, lorries, mines and chemical processes were fossil-powered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second electrification is different. It does not simply add more electrical devices. It turns electricity into the universal translation layer between energy and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An electric motor can move a vehicle, a heat pump can warm a building, an electric arc furnace can melt steel, an electrolyser can split molecules and a chip can execute billions of calculations. Different energy sources \u2014 sun, wind, water, nuclear fission, gas, coal or geothermal heat \u2014 can first be converted into electricity and then translated into many different forms of useful work. Electricity does not standardise the world, but it gives its machines a common language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electric century is therefore not just about producing more power. It is about coupling systems that were previously separate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>transport becomes part of the power system;<\/li>\n<li>heat becomes part of the power system;<\/li>\n<li>industrial processes become part of the power system;<\/li>\n<li>communication and money are already part of the power system;<\/li>\n<li>AI makes knowledge and decision support dependent on electricity as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This coupling creates efficiency and new freedom. In many applications, an electric motor is more efficient and controllable than an internal-combustion engine. A digitally managed grid can coordinate millions of distributed generators and consumers. A village with reliable electricity gains time for learning, work and medical care. Yet around 666 million people still lacked access to electricity in 2023, according to the World Bank. That is not a minor technical gap. It is a boundary around human possibility.<sup><a href=\"#source-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coupling also creates shared vulnerability. When communication, payment, mobility, heating and work depend on the same electric operating layer, the cost of failure rises. A society can become more efficient and more fragile at once. It removes reserves, automates routines and shortens delivery times \u2014 only to discover during a crisis that friction was sometimes another word for a buffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first electric century brought light, power and communication. The second connects machines, data and decisions. The difference is not absolute but one of degree. Beyond a certain point, quantity becomes a new order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electricity was a critical infrastructure of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the twenty-first, it becomes the infrastructure of infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sources-and-notes\">Sources and
