Oil can wait. Electricity cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This brief distinction explains why electrification remains so demanding despite dramatic technical progress. A society does not merely require enough kilowatt-hours each year. It requires the correct power in every hour, minute and second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sun does not negotiate with the evening peak. The wind keeps no timetable. A nuclear station runs continuously but cannot be ramped without limit. A gas plant is flexible but needs fuel and pipelines. Hydropower can provide valuable balancing services but is constrained by geography and hydrology. Every source possesses its own form of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The power system has to synchronise them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Storage matters, but the single word hides large differences. A battery can respond within milliseconds and bridge a few hours. Pumped hydro can deliver large amounts of power but needs suitable geography. Thermal storage can shift heat in buildings or industrial processes. Hydrogen and other synthetic fuels may provide seasonal reserves, but require several lossy conversion stages and new infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The distinction between power and energy is essential. A storage system may deliver a great deal of power briefly or a modest amount for a long time. A system that survives a cloudy evening is not necessarily equipped for two windless weeks or a dry winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sober equation is therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Variable generation + storage + flexible generation + reserves + grids + demand response \u2192 reliable supply<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n No component needs to touch every kilowatt-hour. Together, however, they secure its punctuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politics often hides this temporal dimension inside annual balances. If a country generates as much renewable electricity over a year as its households consume, the claim sounds like full coverage. But annual quantities do not heat a home on one particular cold night. Nor do they operate a data centre on a windless morning. A power system does not live in an annual average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This leads to a sentence that sounds obvious until an economy forgets it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cheap power for one hour is not yet a cheap energy system for a winter, a factory or a data centre.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Negative wholesale prices can indicate that more electricity is being generated at a particular moment than flexible demand can absorb. They can create opportunities for storage, electrolysis or controllable consumption. But they may also signal a grid and market design unable to connect supply and demand across time and distance. The price of one hour does not reveal the cost of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Firm capacity has value even if it runs infrequently. A reserve plant may have poor utilisation and high social value. Markets that pay only for kilowatt-hours sold can underfund readiness. Capacity mechanisms, on the other hand, can preserve inefficient assets or protect politically favoured technologies. There is no cost-free institutional solution here either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Demand response expands the options. Electric vehicles can charge when power is plentiful. Cold stores and buildings can use thermal inertia. Industrial operations can shift some processes where products, labour and contracts allow it. AI can improve weather, grid-flow and demand forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But flexibility is not magic. An aluminium smelter cannot pause at will. A hospital should not run its intensive-care unit according to the spot price. A commuter who must leave for work in the morning has limited interest in being told that the car will charge whenever it is most convenient for the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The temporal constitution of electricity therefore needs priorities. Some loads are flexible, others critical. Some interruptions are economically tolerable, others threaten life. These differences should be decided politically before an algorithm decides them by default during an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Resilience is not the opposite of efficiency. It is efficiency measured across a longer horizon. A system that eliminates every buffer during normal operations and then requires rescue at many times the cost during a crisis was never truly efficient. It merely moved its costs into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The battle against time will not be won by one miraculous storage device. It will be won by a coordinated system able to manage milliseconds, hours, days, seasons and decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The electric century needs more than energy. It needs punctuality as infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reliable electricity requires coordination across milliseconds, hours, seasons and decades.
