Electricity follows a different geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It still requires resources and primary energy. Increasingly, however, power lies in the combination of reliable generation, grid capacity, capital, industry, cooling, water, data links, skills and political stability. A country may be rich in sunlight, gas or uranium and still possess little electric power if it cannot turn those resources into a functioning system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric power forms around nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States combines capital markets, chip design, cloud platforms, research and large energy resources. Its strength is the ability to commercialise new technical possibilities quickly. Its weaknesses include slow permitting, fragmented grids, local connection bottlenecks and the temptation to confuse financial valuation with physical capacity. Renewed growth in American power demand after years of stagnation \u2014 driven in part by data centres \u2014 is exposing those constraints.<sup><a href=\"#source-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China combines manufacturing, grid equipment, mineral processing, batteries, solar supply chains and state coordination at a density no other country matches. Its strength is scale and industrial diffusion. Its risks are excess capacity, debt, geopolitical backlash and the concentration of decision-making and information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe has large grids, industrial experience, research, skilled labour and strong systems engineering. It can build complex machines and operate cross-border power markets. Yet high energy and system costs, slow permits, regulatory fragmentation and unclear priorities weaken its ability to act. In 2025, electricity prices for energy-intensive industries in the European Union still averaged more than twice US levels and almost 50 per cent above China, according to the IEA.<sup><a href=\"#source-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe\u2019s problem is not a lack of knowledge. It is the distance between knowledge and execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its electric test is whether it can finance a high-quality, reliable and increasingly low-emission system without losing the industrial base that builds and pays for it. Regulation can set standards and protect consumers. But if it makes grids, power plants, storage and factories arrive more slowly than old capacity disappears, it eventually protects claims to an infrastructure that does not exist in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gulf states possess energy, capital and geography. They can combine gas, solar power, data centres, desalination and new industrial clusters. Their challenge is moving from the export of fuel to mastery of complex electric value chains. Energy wealth alone does not create an innovative ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India combines a large internal market, digital infrastructure, services, engineers and rapidly growing electricity demand. Its opportunity lies in electrification and industrialisation advancing together. Its risks include unreliable grids, regional inequality, import dependencies, air pollution and the enormous task of building supply faster than demand and population grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa will not be merely raw-material suppliers or consumer markets. Regions combining reliable energy, institutional learning and access to data and trade networks can become new industrial nodes. Those exporting copper, lithium or other materials without building processing, electricity systems and knowledge remain at the beginning of the value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A competition for third countries follows. Power blocs offer more than products. They offer complete stacks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>finance;<\/li>\n<li>power plants and grids;<\/li>\n<li>digital platforms;<\/li>\n<li>chips and telecommunications;<\/li>\n<li>standards, training and maintenance;<\/li>\n<li>political and security alignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cheap asset may therefore be the beginning of a dependency lasting decades. A more expensive offer may include greater local control, open standards or better finance. States do not simply buy technology. They choose parts of their future operating order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new geography will be more concentrated and more distributed at the same time. Data centres, chip plants and high-capacity networks concentrate power in a few locations. Solar, batteries and local grids can decentralise generation. Both processes are occurring together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The central geopolitical conflict of the electric century is therefore not simply between centralisation and decentralisation. It is between systems that organise dependence productively and systems that are paralysed by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No country will be fully sovereign in electricity. Even great powers need resources, markets, knowledge and partners. Sovereignty does not mean autarky.
